Start with your gross income and age
Gross monthly income before tax, in South African rand. Inputs stay on this device.
Use these values throughout the Atlas.
Every layer of protection.
Explore how benefits, insurance, healthcare and savings may respond when illness, injury or death interrupts household finances. A practical learning toolβnot a claim approval, insurance quote or personal financial advice.
Verified regulatory figures are dated, linked to their official sources and separated from assumptions. As at 3 November 2026. Cover, eligibility and benefits always depend on the applicable contract or statute.
Illustrative protection mix
Not a forecast or a standard South African household outcome. This diagram is conceptual, not calculated from entitlement data.
Important: different benefits may overlap, offset or not be payable at all. Use the simulator to test confirmed amounts rather than auto-awarding benefits.
The protection atlas
Twenty-one concepts grouped by five layers. Select a card to see requirements, limitations and primary-source links.
How much income survives?
A scenario calculator for monthly cash flow. Enter amounts supported by your policy or benefits assessment. No state or insurance entitlement is assumed.
Modelling convention: payments are capped at income for the chart, allocated in the order COIDA β UIF β SASSA β group cover β individual IP. Actual offset rules, payment starts, tax, arrears and credits depend on each benefit. A 7-day waiting period is treated as 7/30 of the first month; 30/90/180 days as whole 30-day months. This approximation is for planning only. RAF compensation and lump sums are deliberately excluded.
The financial journey
Explore four modelled life events. Lump sums are shown separately as assets received, not as recurring income; nothing is awarded automatically by RAF or an insurer.
What should you review?
Five questions identify topics worth investigating. There is no automatic recommendation to buy an unavailable product or to replace an existing policy.
What can you budget?
Insurer premiums are individually underwritten. The original model's invented age multipliers have been removed. Enter quotes or amounts you already pay to calculate your real budget.
Figures are entered by youβnot market premium estimates. Policy premiums can change with age, underwriting, benefit design, smokers' rates, occupation, family structure and insurer pricing. Confirm actual written quotes.
Tax treatment explained
Official SARS guidance distinguishes income-protection policy benefits, employer-related policies, medical scheme credits and retirement payments.
2026/27 medical scheme fees tax credit
Effective from 1 March 2026. This is a non-refundable tax credit, not a cash grant.
The coverage heatmap
An event can trigger a potential claim, but diagnosis or circumstance alone never proves policy eligibility. Cells describe possible relevance only.
The regulatory timeline
Only enacted or announced events are dated as effective. Proposed legislation is separately labelled. Confirm the rules applying to your claim or tax year.
Key definitions
Search policy and regulatory terms. These are summaries; the actual wording of a signed contract or legislation controls.
Every source, one table
A high-level comparison across protection and financial resources, with tax caveats and source verification.
| Source | Layer | When relevant | Form | Tax treatment | Verify |
